Dear Prospective Player:
As you enter our basketball program, we are delighted that you are interested in being a part of the Southern Basketball Academy’s Post-Grad Basketball Program.
Our mission is to build a program that would allow our participants to develop discipline, morals, and character as individuals while operating as a harmonious and successful unit. We also will blend individuals into a team with the opportunity to improve on fundamentals, position skill set, and increase knowledge of the game, while attempting to optimize both personal and team potential. A particularly important part of our mission is to prepare each team member to use their talents to achieve their goal in playing at the collegiate level, due to the overall advancement of their academic and athletic skills.
Competition at this level demands skill, dedication, and commitment, and hard work. “Only the committed needed to apply” is what past players have stated. If you feel that you fit, need, and want what is deemed acceptable guidelines found in this handbook, that you agree with our philosophy, then you fit the description of a Southern Basketball Team Member.
Respectfully yours,
Danny Davis
Athletic Director and Head Coach
PHILOSOPHY
Through sports, athletes are taught the value of hard work, discipline, team building, sportsmanship, and other values that help develop a young man’s character. A large part of our self-esteem is derived through positive athletic experiences. The goal of this association is to build a competitive basketball environment in which our team members achieve not only academic and athletic success, but a foundation for success in life as well.
To ensure that athletes are prepared for the commitment and personal sacrifice needed to be successful in athletics, coaches must help them develop and understand the importance of desire, dedication, and self-discipline that play a major role in reaching individual and team goals.
While striving for victory is the nature of athletic competition, it is only one criterion when determining a season’s success. Guiding a team to reach its maximum potential and an athlete to reach its maximum potential are the ultimate goals. Along with this comes an emphasis on good sportsmanship, which includes being modest in victory and accepting in defeat.
Work Hard! No Excuses!
Our Lions Prayer
God, let me play well but fairly. Let competition make me strong but never hostile. Forbid me to rejoice in the adversity of others. If I able to have victory, allow me to be happy; if I am denied, keep me from envy. Remind me that sports are just games, but this game allows me to learn something that matters once the game is over. And if through athletics I set an example, let it be a good one.
Amen

Player Discipline
Coaches are urged to be FAIR and CONSISTENT with their discipline. Participants should be informed from the beginning as to what to expect of them. Coaching Philosophy and Strategy and Code of Ethics
We as an organization like winning, although, WINNING IS NOT THE PROGRAM AND THE TEAM’S MAIN EMPHASIS. Including WINNING, another emphasis will be directed at developing the team member’s individual character, physical skills, and knowledge of the game and academics. Yes, that’s right, the team member will pledge 100% to a quality team effort, culminating in a competitive and winning endeavor. Our quest is to support the development of each individual while blending the members into a smooth-functioning team unit. The results should be a “whole, greater than the sum of its parts.” Lines of communication will be open among the Program Director, Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Association Officers. Likewise, there will be frequent contact among the coaching staff, team members, and parents about important matters. Discipline is considered an important component to achieving success. Therefore, the Southern Basketball Academy Constitution, By-Laws, and Rules of Play will serve as guidelines for proper conduct. If necessary, penalties will be assessed for improper behavior or violations of guidelines.
Coaches will successfully apply the 3-Step Method of Teaching:
1. TELL, SHOW, DRILL
Conflicting coaching ideas, concepts, or techniques will not be taught. All coaches will share common beliefs about the coaching of fundamental concepts, therefore providing a continuous and proper learning environment.
COACH’S CODE OF ETHICS
I hereby pledge to live up to my certification as a coach by following the Coach’s Code of Ethics pledge.
• I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my players ahead of my personal desire to win.
• I will treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of emotional and physical development for the same age group.
• I will do my best to provide a safe playing situation for my players.
• I will promise to review and practice the basic first aid principles needed for injuries of my players.
• I will do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for all my players.
• I will lead by example in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship to all my players.
• I will use coaching techniques appropriate for each of the skills I teach.
• I will remember that I am a youth sports coach and that the game is for children, not adults.
PLAYING TIME
While we will provide playing time for all team members, we will not jeopardize the collective efforts of the team to provide playing time to an individual that is not giving their all. Playing time can be reduced or taken away due to disciplinary issues, lack of practice participation, or injury. The coach will communicate clearly to the player before the next scheduled contest. Discipline issues will result in a loss of playing time.
A MEMO TO SBA Players, Coaches, Parents, & Friends
FROM: Danny Davis,
Athletic Director, Head Coach Southern Basketball Academy Post-Grad
RE: Officiating & Sportsmanship
Please use your best efforts to refrain from complaining about the officials’ calls during the game. Officials are almost always giving their best efforts to assure a fair game. Our experience tells us that complaining doesn’t do any good and quite possibly harms our chances of getting impartial calls. Not only does complaining to the officials violate standards of good sportsmanship, and the philosophy set forth by rules within the SIPPBA conference, it reflects badly upon our Lion’s organization. We realize it is a difficult task. Our Lions’ team has been instructed to expect no comments or reaction to official decisions during the games. We expect the same from our parents, coaches, and friends. We have emphasized to our players that complaining to the officials only breaks their concentration, which is needed to play their best. Not only does complaining and comments harm our concentration, but it also harms other teams in the same or subsequent tournament.
